UESD Expands Academic Portfolio with Focus on Sustainable Agriculture

The University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, Eastern Region, Ghana is moving a step further in its mission to train future leaders in environmental and sustainable solutions by expanding its academic offerings toward sustainable agriculture and related disciplines.

Established by an Act of Parliament and focused on sustainability, environment, and development education, UESD has steadily increased the range of programmes it offers to meet national and global needs.

While UESD’s current officially accredited degree programmes include a variety of environmental and development-focused Bachelor of Science degrees such as BSc Sustainable Development, BSc Water Resources Development, BSc Aquaculture Resources Management, and others the University has also been actively working to broaden its academic portfolio to include programmes directly connected to agriculture and sustainable food systems.

According to information from UESD’s internal planning and strategic materials, the University has been pursuing the accreditation of new degree programmes including one in Agriculture and Sustainable Development signaling that students may soon be able to study farming systems, environmental stewardship, and sustainable food production within a comprehensive sustainability context.

This expansion aligns with USAID, FARA, and other partner engagements that UESD has hosted or launched, such as certificate programmes in sustainable land management and collaborative projects that integrate agricultural, environmental, and sustainability education.

These initiatives reflect growing interest in equipping students with the skills needed to address food security, climate change impacts on farming, and sustainable land use.

Leaders at UESD say that training more students in sustainable agriculture is crucial for Ghana’s future particularly as the nation seeks innovative approaches to improve food systems, create green jobs, and use resources responsibly.

By linking agricultural science with environmental and sustainability education, the University hopes to produce graduates capable of transforming local farming communities and contributing to national development goals.
