The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President (DAOOP), has announced a temporary suspension of the ongoing application process for Ghanaian Citizenship by Historical Diasporans.
The programme, which had been opened to prospective applicants earlier with plans for continuous processing this year, was initially expected to proceed without interruption while new submissions were received on a rolling basis.
However, in a joint public notice, the two institutions explained that the pause forms part of broader efforts to review and improve the system to make it more efficient, accessible and user-friendly for applicants across the global African diaspora.
Authorities say the decision is aimed at refining procedures and enhancing the overall experience for prospective citizens seeking to reconnect with their ancestral homeland.
Officials clarified that although applications were previously scheduled to remain open throughout the current application window, administrative and technical adjustments became necessary, leading to the temporary halt.
The statement emphasized that both the Ministry and DAOOP remain committed to welcoming members of the African diaspora and strengthening ties with people of African descent worldwide.
They noted that the suspension is not a cancellation but a rescheduling intended to ensure a smoother and more seamless process when the programme reopens.
Revised timelines and updated application guidelines, including a new scheduled reopening date, are expected to be communicated through official government channels in due course.
A Meanwhile, the institutions expressed appreciation for the continued interest and cooperation of individuals who have shown enthusiasm toward obtaining Ghanaian citizenship under the historical diaspora initiative.
