The Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs has commenced a three-day familiarization tour of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and its affiliated agencies. The initiative aims to deepen the Committee’s understanding of the Ministry’s operations and challenges.
During the first meeting, sector Minister Hon. Eric Opoku and Deputy Minister Hon. John Dumelo briefed the Committee on key programs, including the Feed Ghana initiative, irrigation-focused agriculture, and poultry development. The Minister outlined pressing challenges such as gaps in decentralisation laws, inadequate access to modern tractors, limited warehouse infrastructure, and a shortage of agricultural extension officers.
The Committee also visited the West African Food System Resilience Project (FSRP), where Project Coordinator Mr. Osei Owusu Agyemang and his team presented an overview of their work in strengthening food security and resilience.
Committee Chairman Hon. Jasaw Seidu Godfred commended the Ministry and FSRP for their efforts and pledged more frequent engagements to support policy development and sector growth
