Asutsuare Rice Farmers Demand Ban on Foreign Imports, Appeal for Road Repairs

Asutsuare, Shai Osudoku District — 7th November 2025

Rice farmers in Asutsuare, a prominent agricultural hub in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, are raising fresh concerns over poor sales and deteriorating infrastructure. Known for its rich production of rice, bananas, and fish, the community is lamenting the lack of patronage for their locally cultivated rice, despite a brief surge in sales following Jonilar.net’s coverage last two years.

According to the farmers, the influx of foreign rice into Ghana’s markets has severely impacted their ability to sell their produce. “We are harvesting some of the best rice in Ghana, but the market is flooded with cheaper imports. We need the government’s intervention to survive,” one farmer stated.

Beyond the economic strain, the farmers are also grappling with poor road conditions that make it difficult for buyers to reach Asutsuare. Roads from the Greater Accra region and other parts of the country are reportedly in disrepair, further discouraging potential customers from travelling to the area.

In response, the community is making a passionate appeal to Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who serves as both the Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, and Mr. Ignatius Godfred Dodoe, the District Chief Executive for Shai Osudoku. They are also calling on the Ministry of Roads and Transport and the Government of Ghana to urgently improve the road network and ban foreign rice imports to protect the local industry.

Jonilar.net will continue to closely follow this story, ensuring that the community’s plea for better infrastructure and policy support is heard and addressed.
