Mepe is set to awaken with vibrant energy on Monday, August 11th, 2025, as Tongu Global and Mepe Ladies Club host the much-anticipated Afenorto Walk Fiesta. Beginning at 4:30 AM from the Mepe Presby JHS Park, the event invites locals and visitors alike to lace up for a morning of unity, wellness, and cultural pride. This year’s theme, “Mepe Goes Orange,” adds a stylish twist, with branded T-shirts available in single, double, and triple packages.

But this walk is more than just a fitness event—it’s a tribute to Mepe’s enduring heritage. The Afenorto Festival, meaning “Period of Rest at Home,” dates back to 1955, when it was officially outdoored after decades of informal celebration. Rooted in the aftermath of the Sagrenti War of 1874, where Mepe warriors fought alongside British forces against the Ashanti-Anlo coalition, the festival honors bravery, unity, and ancestral connection2.
Originally known as Agbekortu, the festival coincided with seasonal floods that paused economic activities, prompting citizens to return home. It evolved into a time for family reunions, clan meetings, and spiritual reflection. Today, Afenorto features grand durbars, musketry, drumming, and colorful processions of Mepe’s five clans—each dressed in symbolic colors and regalia2.
The Afenorto Walk Fiesta is a modern extension of this legacy, blending tradition with contemporary wellness. Organizers encourage participants to share their excitement online using hashtags like #AugustInMepe and #OrangeMepe, as the town prepares for a season of celebration, reflection, and community development.
