Okudzeto Ablakwa Secures Chinese Interest in Ghana’s Electric Vehicle Ambitions

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced a major diplomatic breakthrough following his recent visit to China, where electric vehicle (EV) giant GAC expressed strong interest in establishing a manufacturing plant in Ghana. The initiative, he said, is part of a broader strategy to leverage Ghana’s lithium reserves and economic recovery for industrial transformation. “In our bilateral engagement on the sidelines of the ongoing China-Africa summit in Changsha, we further agreed to work towards establishing an electric car manufacturing plant in Ghana anchored on Ghana’s strategic lithium deposits,” Ablakwa revealed.

China, which leads the global EV market with seven of the world’s top ten EV brands, is seen as a critical partner in Ghana’s green industrial future. Ablakwa emphasized the long-term vision behind the move, stating, “President Mahama’s administration is firmly committed to leveraging diplomacy for the transformation of our dear country.” He also highlighted the broader trade benefits of the partnership, noting that “China has offered 0% tariff on all exports from Ghana,” a move expected to boost trade, create jobs, and empower local entrepreneurs.

The proposed EV plant is expected to position Ghana as a regional hub for electric vehicle production in West Africa, aligning with global trends in clean energy and sustainable development. Through this renewed focus on economic diplomacy, Ghana aims to turn strategic partnerships into tangible progress for its people.
