260,000 Africans Have Migrated Since 2012—We Must Address the Root Causes” – Boakye-Danquah’s Urgent Plea

The growing wave of African youth embarking on dangerous sea voyages in search of better opportunities has reached alarming proportions, threatening lives and the continent’s future. Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, former government spokesperson on governance and security, calls for immediate action to curb this crisis, urging African leaders to strengthen policies that address the root causes—unemployment, inadequate education, and political instability.

“The loss of skilled professionals—doctors, nurses, academics, and others—undermines our continent’s development,” he warns, emphasizing the urgent need to invest in local opportunities.

According to Boakye-Danquah, the staggering migration figures highlight Africa’s need for strategic intervention. “Since 2012, more than 260,000 Africans, predominantly youth, have migrated to other continents, driven by unemployment, poverty, conflict, and climate change,” he notes, citing alarming statistics.

While some countries like Senegal have developed strategies to combat irregular migration, Boakye-Danquah insists that “more comprehensive measures are needed across the continent to secure our future.” He urges investments in education, vocational training, and climate-conscious innovation to empower Africa’s youth.

“By implementing sustainable development initiatives and expanding legal migration pathways, we can mitigate the desperation fueling these dangerous journeys,” he stresses, calling for collaborative efforts among states, organizations, and communities to preserve Africa’s next generation.
