The $8.3 Billion Roadmap: GTDC CEO Professor Kobby Mensah Details Ghana’s 2027 Tourism Ambitions

Ghana’s tourism sector is set for a massive transformation as the Ghana Tourism Development Company (GTDC) rolls out a strategic “revolution” aimed at generating $8.3 billion in annual revenue and attracting 4.3 million visitors by 2027. During an in-depth policy discussion, Professor Kobby Mensah, CEO of the GTDC, outlined a visionary roadmap that shifts the agency’s focus toward aggressive resource mobilization and digital modernization. Established in 1972, the GTDC is repositioning itself as a key investment partner, distinct from marketing-led bodies, by taking equity shares in landmark projects such as the Asuokow Slave River site and the Big Tree site to ensure long-term financial and environmental sustainability.

A cornerstone of this new era is the Ghana Tourism Investment Platform (GTIP), a comprehensive web-based portal at investintourism.org that profiles investable opportunities across all 261 districts and 16 regions of Ghana. This “one-stop shop” provides potential global investors with critical data on infrastructure, land accessibility, and financial viability, effectively removing the guesswork from tourism development. Complementing this is the Ghana Tourism Marketplace, a verified online ecosystem for booking hotels, car rentals, and tour guides. This platform is designed to protect travelers through a system of verified vendors and secure payment gateways, while also creating a sustainable revenue model for the GTDC through small transaction surcharges.

Professor Mensah was candid about the obstacles ahead, particularly the challenge of poor road infrastructure leading to major tourist sites, but noted that the new digital tools would empower investors with the transparency needed to navigate these conditions. By engaging closely with hotel associations, traditional councils, and tour operators, the GTDC is fostering a shared ownership framework to revitalize the industry. The ultimate goal of this data-driven, AI-integrated approach is to elevate Ghana into a premier global destination, positioning its tourism economy to compete directly with African giants like South Africa and Kenya.
