Throwback Thursday: Music group Gallaxy reminisce the making of ‘Yema me’ music video

On several occasions, music video directors all over the world have had to go through the difficult task of hiring talents for video projects but for Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeat music group Gallaxy, the process was different as they shared memories of how fans they met via social media ended up in their music video “Yema Me”.
Disclosing how they met the dancers, the group in an Instagram post a while ago, said “They sent us a whatsApp video of them dancing to all our songs. We called them on phone; we became friends’ #TheEndResult……”
When contacted Gallaxy to further ascertain how it all happened, the group said the kids who form a part of a dance group ‘Machine Dancers’ sent them a dance video through their publicist Jonilar who informed them of the “skills and energy” displayed by the kids.
“Our management therefore decided to feature them in their music video. Some of the fans came from eight of the ten regions in Ghana to be in the video and it is worth it. Gallaxy added.
On the way forward Gallaxy reveal they will be going to shows with them when the need arise. Gallaxy together with their management are currently paying the school fees of the two boys and a girl who are currently in Junior High School at Tema.

It Gets Better (A Poem for Xenophobias) by Samcilla Baakojr

Estranging the rest of Africa from the world
Black countries tortured their own with flames
TheZulu once again affirm their underhanded past
Dishonouring the struggle, their forefathers fought for peace
Yet they cry freedom for all..
Soaked in blood mud, pierced by the claws of their greedwhich prevent their own skin colour from feeding… Ignorance?

the great holocaust! Who survives?
Emelia was a pretty lady
Smiling friendly her lips always ready
Living quiet in lovely suburbia
Her untimely death by non-whites with xenophobia
Why did the potter create them this way?
Was it because there were two types of clay?
One forged as a Cistern the next as an Urn
And exactly whom should this mess concern?

While the authorities are spectators
Instigated from high level seats
First the defacing of statues to this
something much bigger is brewing
Tears of the victims and their families’
finally rinsing away beautiful painted canvas
“Not my fault I’m better than you, Zulu
You’re the black ball, I’m the cue
My life is going up, yours is going down,
Because you wear a dunce cap and I wear a crown”

…Your locals demand free everything
But foreigners see opportunity in building your economy
Allow this fate because it’s everywhere; will you also leave my land in peace or pieces?
It gets better Zulu. It gets better…
Do enough to stamp out, racism, intolerance and xenophobia
Respect all nationalities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation
and ethnic origins.
Because no one is good or bad on the basis of skin colour
the great holocaust! Who survives?
It gets better!

Press Release: Black Box by Efo Kodjo Mawugbe.

“Aren’t we all Blemazadonians?” Efo Kodjo Mawugbe, Blemazado, 2008
BLACK BOX written by Efo Kodjo, scripted (scenography) by Arthur Lestrange with Shaji Karyat will feature on the stage of Alliance Francaise Accra on Tuesday 21stApril, 2015 at 7:30 pm for a journey through the theatrics of life.

Four years after his untimely passing, Efo Kodjo Mawugbe; playwright extraordinaire, dramatist, and performer leads an awakening of one of his non-exhaustive repertoire of plays all the way from Blemazado.  Efo Kodjo who is widely known and appreciated for his contribution to education and development of arts in Ghana and hailed more recently for his play, In the chest of a Woman has another of his works seeing the light of day even after his sojourn to Tsiefe.

In the play, Shaji Karyat performs as Papa Ayivi. In this newly devised piece, Papa Ayivi, who bears the name of the king’s linguist and storyteller in Cinderama, is a hybrid of Bob (Sister), Bodza (The G-Yard People) and Kokosakyi (Blemazado). A fifty-year-old playwright, ICT expert, linguist and lunatic, Papa Ayivi rummages through the rubbish in a harrowing and hilarious attempt to scratch out an existence and build some form of shelter for his people and himself.

The question in all its acuteness is as follows. “How can a human being find clothes and shelter in a poisoned and mutant world, how can one continue to live, to work, to create, for oneself and for others? Papa Ayivi, reject among rejects, is still standing, most of the time. His presence and his harrowing-hilarious actions in the versatile and dubious world where he lives reveal a maternal man who refuses to give up fighting. His delirious alienation will lead him perhaps not to save his entire people but at least to attempt to save a single being. But is there still time?”
This play is designed to shock, create a chain thought, provoke discourse, enlighten and above all,
explore the human condition.10% of ticket sales will be given to the Efo Kojo Mawugbe Foundation.
The play is supported by Institut Francais Ghana
